Parents in Gauteng can expect an exciting yet crucial time starting 16 October 2025. This marks the beginning of when Grade 1 and 8 admissions for the 2026 academic year will roll out with the delivery of school placement letters. After the closure of online applications in late August, the Gauteng Education Department is preparing to notify parents about where their children will be placed.

Understanding the Process of School Placement Letters

MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane/ SABC News

Every year, the Gauteng Education Department oversees the placement of thousands of learners into Grade 1 and Grade 8. This year, applications were submitted online, ensuring a more efficient process. The Grade 1 and 8 admissions were officially closed at the end of August 2025, with over 700,000 applications submitted for the 2026 school year.

For more guidance, parents are encouraged to research schools before accepting placement offers in our article on Grade 1 and 8 Admissions: Parents Encouraged to Research Schools Before Accepting Placement.

Starting on 16 October 2025, parents can expect to receive SMS notifications about their child’s school placement. These notifications will be sent to the phone numbers provided during the application process. It’s crucial that parents ensure their contact information is correct to avoid any issues with receiving placement notifications.

What to Do Once You Receive Your School Placement Letter

Once you receive your school placement letter, there is an important next step: accepting or declining the placement offer. Parents will have seven days to respond to the placement offer. Failing to do so could impact the child’s chances of securing a spot in the school they are assigned to.

If for any reason the placement does not meet your expectations, the Gauteng Department of Education advises parents not to panic. As MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, assured parents, “No child will be left unplaced.” The department is committed to ensuring that all learners will be placed in schools for the 2026 academic year.

What Happens If You Don’t Receive a Message by 16 October?

It is important to note that not all placement letters will be sent on the same day. While notifications are expected to begin on 16 October 2025, the process could take several days. If you do not receive a message by the 16th, Chiloane reassures parents not to worry. “We will be running with this up until we place all of them, 100%,” he stated. This means there is no reason for parents to feel anxious or concerned if there is a slight delay.

Key Criteria for School Placements

The placement process follows a clear set of criteria to ensure fairness and transparency. The Gauteng Department of Education places priority on factors such as proximity to the school, availability of space, and whether a sibling is already enrolled at the school. The placement system is designed to meet the needs of as many students as possible, ensuring that children are placed in schools that are suitable for them.

The Importance of Accurate Contact Information

One of the key elements in ensuring a smooth Grade 1 and 8 admissions process is providing accurate contact information. MEC Chiloane emphasised the importance of parents submitting their correct cellphone numbers when applying. This is critical because the placement letters will be sent via SMS to the phone numbers on record. Incorrect or outdated contact information could result in parents missing vital placement updates.

Support Channels for Parents

For those struggling with the online system or who need assistance, the Gauteng Department of Education has set up several support channels. Parents can contact the GDE’s dedicated hotline, available at no charge, or use WhatsApp to get help. Additionally, walk-in centres are available for in-person support, with over 80 centres spread across the province.

The GDE also encourages parents to visit its official website and stay updated on the latest news regarding Grade 1 and 8 admissions.

Gauteng Education Department’s Commitment to 100% Placement

One of the most reassuring aspects of the Grade 1 and 8 admissions process in Gauteng is the department’s commitment to 100% learner placement. The Gauteng Department of Education has consistently met its goal of placing all learners in schools for the academic year. With the support systems in place and a well-organised placement process, parents can feel confident that their child will be accommodated in the 2026 school year.

Stay Informed and Act Quickly

The arrival of school placement letters for Grade 1 and 8 admissions from 16 October 2025 marks an important milestone for parents in Gauteng. By acting promptly on placement offers, ensuring correct contact details, and using available support channels when needed, parents can navigate this process smoothly.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s efforts to provide a transparent, fair, and well-organised school placement process are clear. Rest assured, every child will be placed, and the education system is committed to meeting the needs of its learners. For more information, visit the Gauteng Education Department’s official website.
