South Africa is under a serious weather alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns of extreme fire danger across several provinces. Hot, dry, and windy conditions on Monday, 13 October, are expected to create perfect conditions for veldfires to spread rapidly. Communities, farmers, and travellers are urged to take precautions as authorities prepare for high fire risk.
Where Fire Danger is Highest
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS official warnings), extremely high fire danger is expected in:
- Laingsburg in the Western Cape
- Most of the Northern Cape
- Central Free State
- The Limpopo Valley
- Extreme south-western North West
In these regions, the Fire Danger Index (FDI) is at its highest level. When the FDI is red, fires can ignite easily and spread quickly, making them difficult to control.
Weather Outlook by Province
SAWS forecasts show varying conditions across the country, but hot and dry weather dominates much of South Africa.
Gauteng
Partly cloudy and warm, with hot conditions in the far north. The UV index (a measure of sunburn risk) is high.
Mpumalanga
Partly cloudy and warm, with isolated thundershowers along the escarpment. The Lowveld will be fine and hot.
Limpopo
Warm to hot across the province, with very hot temperatures in the Lowveld. Showers are possible in the south-east.
North West & Free State
Both provinces will be partly cloudy, warm, and hot. Central Free State is flagged for extreme fire danger.
Northern Cape
Morning coastal fog, otherwise warm to hot inland. Isolated thundershowers in the southwest, fine in the north.
Western Cape
Morning fog in places, then partly cloudy and warm. Thundershowers are possible inland, while the west coast stays cloudy. The UV index is very high.
Eastern Cape
Morning fog in parts, followed by partly cloudy, warm to hot conditions. Scattered thundershowers are likely in some areas.
KwaZulu-Natal
Morning and evening fog inland. Otherwise, partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers. The UV index will be moderate.
Safety Advice for the Public
During this weather alert, South Africans are urged to be extra cautious. Key safety measures include:
- Avoid lighting open fires in rural or dry areas.
- Extinguish braais and campfires completely before leaving.
- Dispose of matches and cigarettes safely.
- Follow official SAWS forecasts and updates.
- Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
- Report smoke or fire immediately to disaster management services.
Why This Weather Alert Matters
This weather alert is a reminder of how quickly conditions can change. Extreme fire danger threatens farms, wildlife, and communities. Ignoring warnings increases the risk of veldfires spreading out of control.
By staying informed, acting responsibly, and following official guidance, South Africans can reduce the risk of fire outbreaks and protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
