Orlando Pirates have thrown the Premiership wide open after their emphatic 3-0 win over Chippa United, and South Africa is in for a thrilling ride this season the 2025/26 Betway Premiership is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested title races in years.
For the first time in a long while, the country’s traditional “big three”, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates, are all looking like serious contenders. Adding to the excitement, Sekhukhune United have thrown themselves into the mix, refusing to be just a supporting act.
As the league pauses for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the table tells a story of fierce competition. Eric Tinkler’s Sekhukhune lead the standings with 13 points from five games, edging Chiefs on goal difference. Defending champions Sundowns sit two points behind in third, while Pirates now on a roll with three straight wins have climbed to fifth on nine points, level with TS Galaxy.

Orlando Pirates Send Strong Statement
The Buccaneers were ruthless in Gqeberha on Sunday, hammering Chippa United 3-0 in a performance that underlined their intent to fight for the crown.
Oswin Appollis was the heartbeat of the victory, delivering two assists and dictating play with confidence. Though he came agonisingly close to a goal himself when his second-half strike crashed against the post, his Player of the Match display will have delighted Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos ahead of crucial qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
Tito Maswanganyi got Pirates off the mark in the 10th minute after a costly mistake from Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Trying to play out from the back, Nwabali’s misplaced pass was intercepted by Kamogelo Sebelele, who quickly found Evidence Makgopa. The striker set up Maswanganyi to slot home with ease.
Pirates could have extended their lead much earlier as Chippa’s defence struggled with their own risky build-up play. Eventually, Deon Hotto made it 2-0 before halftime with a composed finish, before substitute Tshepang Moremi sealed the result with a low strike in the second half again assisted by the influential Appollis.
The only concern for Pirates came when Maswanganyi limped off with a groin injury after slipping while attempting a piece of skill to entertain the crowd. His availability will be closely monitored, especially with Bafana fixtures looming.
A Wide-Open Title Chase
For Pirates, the dominant win was more than just three points; it was a statement that they are serious contenders this season. With Sundowns as defending champions, Chiefs rediscovering their edge, and Sekhukhune proving no pushovers, fans can finally rejoice.
The Premiership title race is alive, competitive, and wide open. South Africa, buckle up this season promises fireworks.
