Mamelodi Sundowns have issued an official statement following Lucas Ribeiro’s announcement that he had resigned from the club in an attempt to force a transfer.
The Brazilian forward revealed on Thursday that he had submitted his resignation and intended to take the matter to the FIFA Football Tribunal, claiming “just cause” to terminate his contract. Ribeiro argued that recent judicial precedents supported his position, making him confident of a favorable outcome.
Ongoing Negotiations
Sundowns confirmed that they were still in talks regarding Ribeiro’s possible transfer, stressing that discussions with interested clubs were ongoing. The Betway Premiership champions noted that they had rebuffed multiple offers for the player since the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup, as they sought terms that served the best interests of both the club and the player.
Mamelodi Sundowns Philosophy and Commitment
In their statement, Sundowns emphasized that their long-term success has been built on a strong commitment to the development, growth, and financial sustainability of their players.
The club highlighted its continued investment in youth academies and grassroots football, aiming to nurture talent capable of representing Sundowns, South Africa, and even international teams on the global stage. Beyond youth development, the club has also invested heavily in recruiting and developing top talent from South Africa, the African continent, and South America.
Policy on Transfers
Sundowns reaffirmed their longstanding policy of engaging in fair negotiations with clubs interested in their players. They stressed that their objective in transfer dealings has always been to balance the interests of the player, the club, and potential suitors, ensuring just and constructive outcomes for all parties involved.
The Pretoria giants also acknowledged that several high-profile clubs had made enquiries about Sundowns players following the FIFA Club World Cup. They reiterated their commitment to ongoing negotiations as part of their broader philosophy of fairness and growth.
Despite the uncertainty around Ribeiro’s future, Sundowns assured their supporters that the players, technical team, management, board, and chairman Tlhopie Motsepe remain united and determined to compete for success in both domestic and continental competitions.
