Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has confirmed that its smallest and most affordable electric car the Atto 1, also known as Dolphin Mini, Dolphin Surf, or Seagull in other markets will launch in South Africa this September.
What Is the BYD Atto 1?
Targeted at urban commuters, the Atto 1 is a compact, youthful, and stylish electric car designed for city living. With a footprint of 3,990 mm in length and 1,720 mm in width, it’s roughly the size of the electric Mini Cooper, but slightly more compact than the GWM Ora 03 and BYD’s current entry-level model, the Dolphin.
Despite its small size, the Atto 1 is equipped with BYD’s innovative Blade Battery, available in two configurations:
- 30 kWh (offered in both 288-volt and 300-volt versions)
- 42.2 kWh (288-volt only)
These battery options offer estimated driving ranges of:
- 220 km (30 kWh 288V)
- 322 km (30 kWh 300V)
- 310 km (42.2 kWh)

Charging and Performance
Charging capabilities differ slightly between the battery versions. The smaller pack supports up to 65 kW at a DC fast charger, while the larger one can handle up to 85 kW. According to BYD, recharging from 10% to 80% can be done in just 30 minutes under optimal conditions.
All variants are front-wheel drive and powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Power outputs vary:
- 65 kW for the 30 kWh versions
- 115 kW for the 42.2 kWh version
In terms of acceleration, the Atto 1 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in:
- 12.1 seconds (30 kWh, 288V)
- 11.1 seconds (30 kWh, 300V)
- 9.1 seconds (42.2 kWh)

Interior and Tech
Inside, the Atto 1 will feature BYD’s rotating infotainment touchscreen, offering access to multimedia, navigation, and system controls in both portrait and landscape orientations. Full interior specifications for the local model are yet to be confirmed, but the vehicle is expected to provide a modern, tech-rich user experience.
