South Africa’s new vehicle market has remained remarkably resilient in 2025, maintaining a strong sales trajectory despite a slight year-on-year dip. In the first six months of the year, total new vehicle sales reached 232,474 units, down from 245,971 recorded during the same period in 2024. However, the industry has consistently surpassed the 40,000-unit mark each month, even at its lowest in April (42,401 units), setting the stage for a potential full-year total of over 500,000 units—a milestone that would mark the third consecutive year of post-pandemic recovery.
A Cautious Yet Promising Outlook
According to projections released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), the rest of 2025 looks promising. Improvements in key economic indicators, including revived business and consumer sentiment, have bolstered expectations for continued growth.
The South African Reserve Bank has echoed this optimism, noting that the risks to economic growth are now more balanced. Structural reforms, particularly in energy and transport sectors, are expected to support improved GDP growth of approximately 1.5% this year, which could lead to modest increases in vehicle sales compared to 2024.
