In a welcome development for South Africans, Eskom confirms no load shedding for July 2025, bringing a much-needed reprieve during the winter season. The state utility credits this to improved operational performance and sustained system stability, despite increased demand.
Why the Lights Are Staying On
On 29 June 2025, Eskom reassured the public that its Winter Outlook, released in May, remains accurate. This projection showed that load shedding wouldn’t be necessary if unplanned outages remained under 13,000 MW.
“The Winter Outlook, published on 5 May 2025, remains valid. It indicates that loadshedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000 MW,” Eskom stated in its official release .
Although recent figures show breakdowns hovering slightly above that threshold, Eskom says emergency reserves and strategic planning have helped avoid disruptions.
Eskom Confirms No Load Shedding Due to Improved Performance
Eskom’s 2025 Winter Outlook outlines three risk scenarios. Under the current mid-risk scenario (14,000 to 15,000 MW of unplanned outages), minimal or no load shedding is expected.
CEO Dan Marokane shared his optimism:
“This year’s winter outlook prediction is built on an improvement in operational performance and overall efficiency. We are optimistic that there will be no power cuts through August” .
Separating Facts from Fiction
The announcement came in response to false social media rumours suggesting Stage 4 and Stage 6 load shedding from 6 July. Eskom quickly debunked the misinformation.
“Sufficient emergency reserves are in place and are strategically deployed to support demand during morning and evening peak periods,” the utility confirmed .
These efforts show that despite occasional strain, Eskom is managing the grid proactively and transparently.
