Motorists Warned of Rock-Throwing Incidents on N4 Near Brits and Rustenburg

Motorists using the N4 highway between Brits Plaza and Rustenburg have been urged to exercise extreme caution following the resurgence of rock-throwing incidents. The Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Bakwena), which manages this section of the route, has issued a firm warning after reports of such dangerous activity surfaced again over the past week.

Rock-Throwing Incidents Resurface

According to Kormorant, several alarming cases have recently been reported in which individuals were seen throwing rocks at passing vehicles along the N4 corridor. These attacks not only endanger the safety of drivers and passengers but also pose a serious threat to the structural integrity of vehicles, particularly when traveling at high speeds.

Bakwena described the incidents as life-threatening and has appealed to the public to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves. “These acts of rock-throwing are not only criminal but also life-threatening,” the company warned.

Bakwena’s 24/7 Patrol Response

To combat these threats, Bakwena has reiterated that their road patrol teams are active 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring constant surveillance of the route. These teams are tasked with monitoring activity along the highway, clearing debris, and responding to emergency situations as swiftly as possible.

“Our patrollers are on the road 24/7 to keep it safe and clear,” said a spokesperson. “We urge all motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.”

Public Urged to Report Suspicious Activity

Motorists who witness any suspicious behavior — such as individuals loitering near overpasses, bridges, or secluded roadside areas — are encouraged to report these sightings without delay. Bakwena has a dedicated 24-hour help desk to receive such reports, and quick public action can assist in preventing further danger.

To report rock-throwing or any suspicious activities, motorists can contact the help desk at 0800 225 9362. This number is monitored around the clock, and every report contributes to making the N4 safer for all road users.

Potential Consequences and Risks

Throwing rocks at moving vehicles is not only a criminal offense under South African law but has in some past cases resulted in deadly accidents. Windshields shattered by rocks can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, sometimes leading to collisions, rollovers, and serious injuries or fatalities.

Children and adults alike have been victims of such reckless behavior across the country, with certain hotspots along highways becoming notorious for such crimes. Police and concessionaires have long struggled to completely eliminate the problem, making public cooperation and timely reporting essential in addressing the threat.

Safety Tips for Motorists

In light of the renewed threat, road safety experts and law enforcement have offered a series of precautionary tips to help motorists protect themselves while traveling along the N4:

  • Avoid isolated areas: Try not to stop on the side of the road in quiet or dimly lit areas unless it’s an emergency.
  • Stay aware of surroundings: Always scan the road ahead and sides for any individuals standing close to the roadway or overpasses.
  • Keep windows up: Especially when driving through risky areas, ensure your windows are closed and doors are locked.
  • Travel in daylight: If possible, plan trips to avoid traveling late at night when visibility is low.
  • Don’t engage with perpetrators: If you notice rock-throwing or suspicious activity, do not stop or confront the individuals. Instead, drive to the nearest safe area and report the incident.

Call for Community Vigilance

With the N4 being a vital route for daily commuters and freight transportation between Gauteng and the North West, maintaining the safety of all road users is critical. Bakwena, in partnership with law enforcement, continues to monitor the situation and will act decisively against any individuals caught endangering lives on the road.

Ultimately, the safety of South Africa’s roadways relies not just on patrollers and officials, but also on the vigilance and responsiveness of the motoring public. By staying alert and reporting incidents, motorists can play a direct role in preventing further harm and ensuring safer journeys for all.
