Severe Weather Warnings for Multiple Provinces

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several weather warnings today due to a cold front moving through the country. Gale-force winds, heavy rainfall, and even snow are expected, which will impact both road and air travel.

In Eastern Cape, strong winds and freezing temperatures are already causing disruptions. Snowfall is expected in the northern high-lying areas, with some places seeing 1 to 5 cm of snow. The coast is also facing rough seas, with waves reaching up to 6 meters. SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for these conditions, and they are expected to continue for most of the day.

The Western Cape is experiencing heavy rainfall, which has led to flooding in some low-lying areas. Cape Town has been affected, and with canals and retention ponds at capacity, roads are flooded, causing congestion and delays. Residents are advised to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The Free State and Northern Cape are also under a Yellow Level 1 warning for snow. While the snowfall is expected to be light, it could cause hazardous driving conditions, especially in higher areas where icy roads are a concern. Gauteng is experiencing chilly weather with strong winds, but no major disruptions are expected in the province as of now.

Impacts of Winds, Rain, and Snow on Transport

The severe weather has already started to disrupt transport across South Africa, with roads, airports, and rail services facing delays.

Road Transport

The main concern for road transport today is the combination of high winds and snow. In provinces like Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Free State, the strong winds could make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles, especially for those in high-sided trucks. Icy roads and snow accumulation will also cause slippery conditions, particularly in high-lying areas.

In the Western Cape, flooding has caused road closures in some areas, with significant delays in Cape Town and surrounding areas. Commuters are advised to avoid these routes, and those who must travel should exercise extra caution, drive at reduced speeds, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Snowfall in the Free State and Northern Cape may also cause road closures or disruptions. Drivers should check road conditions before heading out and be prepared for icy patches that could make roads impassable.

Air Travel

Airports in areas affected by severe weather may experience delays or cancellations. Cape Town International Airport, for example, has warned of potential disruptions due to strong winds and heavy rain. Passengers flying in or out of Cape Town today should check their flight status for any updates. Similarly, airports in Eastern Cape and Free State are also on alert, with possible delays as conditions worsen.

Rail Services

Rail services could also be impacted by the weather. The combination of strong winds, heavy rain, and snow may affect rail tracks and overhead lines. Trains in affected areas may experience delays or cancellations, and travelers are advised to check with their service providers for the latest updates.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

With severe weather expected to continue throughout the day, it’s important to stay informed and take the necessary precautions. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Stay Updated: Check the weather regularly through official channels like the South African Weather Service (SAWS) or local news outlets for updates on any warnings or advisories.
  • Drive Safely: If you must travel, reduce your speed and increase your following distance to allow for extra stopping time. Avoid driving in flooded areas or on icy roads, and be especially cautious in regions affected by snow.
  • Air and Rail Travel: If you’re flying or traveling by train, expect possible delays. Contact your airline or rail service for updates on your travel schedule.
  • Be Prepared for Emergencies: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including water, food, and blankets, especially if you’re in a region with snow or extreme cold.

Final Word

Today’s weather is bringing challenging conditions to South Africa, with strong winds, heavy rain, and snow expected to disrupt transport in many areas. Whether you’re driving, flying, or taking the train, it’s crucial to stay informed and take extra care. Follow the advice of local authorities, monitor weather updates, and plan your travel accordingly. By staying prepared and cautious, you can help ensure your safety during these unpredictable weather conditions.
