As South Africa inches closer to winter, today’s weather offers a refreshing break from last week’s biting cold. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), most parts of the country will enjoy fine, cool conditions with no significant weather warnings in place.
The shift to more stable weather comes after a recent cold front swept across several provinces. With winter officially starting in June, South Africans can expect cooler mornings and clearer skies as the season transitions.
What to Expect Across the Provinces
Gauteng
Residents in Gauteng can look forward to calm and comfortable conditions. With cool temperatures and clear skies expected throughout the day, it’s an ideal time to get outdoors or travel safely.
Mpumalanga
Foggy conditions may affect the far western parts of the province early in the morning, but it will clear up as the day progresses. The Lowveld will be warmer, while the rest of the province remains cool and dry.
Limpopo
Much like Mpumalanga, Limpopo will experience some morning fog in the southwest. However, the fog will lift quickly, making way for a fine, cool day. Warmer temperatures are expected in the Lowveld.
North West
The North West province is in for another day of mild, dry conditions. Temperatures will stay on the cooler side, but plenty of sunshine is expected, making it feel pleasant overall.
Free State
The Free State will remain one of the colder regions today, with early morning lows giving way to cool, sunny weather. These typical winter-like conditions are expected to persist as the season progresses.
Northern Cape
Coastal fog may affect visibility in the early hours, particularly along the west coast. Inland areas will be windy and range from cool to warm. Moderate to fresh southeasterly winds are expected along the coastline.
Western Cape
Weather conditions will vary across the province. While the interior remains mostly fine, coastal regions in the southwest and south will be cloudy with a chance of light rain. Winds will gradually shift to a southwesterly direction later in the day.
Eastern Cape
- Western half: Clear skies in the morning will give way to some afternoon cloud cover, particularly in southern areas. Light evening showers are likely along the coast and nearby interior.
- Eastern half: Expect a cold, clear start, becoming partly cloudy later in the day with similar light rain possible along the southern coastal stretch.
KwaZulu-Natal
Although not fully detailed in the SAWS report, KwaZulu-Natal typically sees mild and partly cloudy conditions at this time of year. Residents should monitor local updates for the most accurate forecasts.
A Milder Start to the Week
Today’s weather is a welcome relief after last week’s harsh cold front. The absence of warnings and severe conditions signals a period of calm, though temperatures will steadily decline as winter sets in.
For farmers, travellers, and outdoor workers, the fine conditions present a valuable opportunity to carry out plans without disruption. But with the winter season looming, it’s wise to prepare for lower overnight temperatures.
