Today’s Weather Alert: Disruptive Rain, Damaging Winds, and Flood Risk for Western Cape

The Western Cape is facing severe weather today, May 20, 2025, with multiple warnings in place from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). These include heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and a risk of flooding. The public is advised to take precautions, as these conditions may cause significant disruptions.

Disruptive Rainfall and Flood Risk

Heavy rainfall is expected across the Western Cape today, increasing the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas and informal settlements. SAWS predicts rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm, with up to 60 mm possible in the mountains. This could lead to flash floods, especially in areas with poor drainage systems. Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in flood-prone areas.

For the latest updates on the situation, refer to the SAWS weather forecast.

Damaging Winds and Sea Hazards

In addition to rain, strong winds are expected today. SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds, which could affect coastal areas from Alexander Bay to Plettenberg Bay. These winds may cause rough sea conditions, making maritime activities hazardous and potentially leading to delays at smaller harbours and ports.

On land, high-sided vehicles could struggle in the gusty conditions. Power outages and communication disruptions are also possible due to the strength of the winds. Drivers should reduce their speed and be cautious of sudden gusts.

Snowfall in High-lying Areas

Today’s weather will also bring snow to the mountainous areas of the Western Cape. While snow can be beautiful, it also brings hazardous driving conditions. If you plan to travel to higher elevations, check the road conditions before heading out and ensure your vehicle is equipped to handle icy conditions.

Safety Precautions

To stay safe during today’s adverse weather conditions, follow these important safety tips:

  • Limit travel: If you’re in a flood-prone area or need to cross rivers or bridges, avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
  • Stay indoors: The heavy rain and strong winds pose a serious risk, so it’s safest to stay inside.
  • Secure loose items: Outdoor objects like garden furniture should be stored safely to prevent them from being blown around.
  • Stay updated: Keep monitoring the weather throughout the day by following the South African Weather Service and local news channels.
  • Report emergencies: If you encounter dangerous situations like flooded roads, contact local authorities immediately.

Affected Areas

The following regions are under Yellow Level 2 warnings due to the severe weather expected today:

  • Disruptive Rainfall: Cape Winelands, Cape Metropole, West Coast, and parts of the Overberg Districts.
  • Damaging Winds and Waves: Between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.
  • Interior Winds: Northern Cape (excluding the northwest and extreme northern parts), northern Western Cape, and parts of Eastern Cape.

If you live in or are travelling through these areas, take extra care, as the weather could create hazardous conditions.

Stay Informed

For the most up-to-date information on today’s weather, visit the South African Weather Service website or follow them on social media. This will ensure you stay informed about any changes in weather conditions and any new warnings issued throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

Today’s weather in the Western Cape will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and a risk of flooding. It’s important to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and limit travel if possible. By staying alert and following safety guidelines, you can help ensure your safety during these challenging conditions. Stay safe and stay updated on the latest weather alerts.
