Buying pre-owned cars in South Africa can be a costly endeavor, especially when it comes to newer models. The most affordable new passenger vehicle currently starts at R176 999 — a price tag that is out of reach for many. Fortunately, the second-hand market offers a wide range of budget-friendly options for under R140 000, giving financially conscious buyers the chance to find reliable and economical rides. According to AutoTrader, models like the popular Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Atos, and Ford Figo stand out as great value-for-money choices.

AutoTrader CEO George Mienie points out that “as South Africans navigate economic uncertainty, many are seeking ways to stretch their rands further without compromising on quality or safety.” He adds that the used car market still offers dependable and affordable vehicles that don’t sacrifice performance, reliability, or efficiency.

10 solid pre-owned cars under R140 000

1. Suzuki Swift

A firm favourite in the budget category, the Suzuki Swift remains one of the most sought-after hatchbacks in the country. Second-hand models average around R138 945, with relatively low mileage of about 30 455 km and an average age of just four years. Most pre-owned Swifts come with a four-cylinder 1.2L petrol engine and return an impressively low 4.9L/100km in fuel consumption.

2. Hyundai Atos

Though no longer available as a new model, the Hyundai Atos is a hit in the used car market. Between January and March, it averaged a price of R138 255, mileage of 34 088 km, and was typically about four years old. Powered by a 1.1L four-cylinder engine, the Atos is light on fuel with a consumption figure of 5.9L/100km.

3. Ford Figo

Despite being discontinued, the Ford Figo is still widely loved for its reliability and cost-efficiency. It typically sells for around R132 955, with an average age of five years and mileage of 34 937 km. Depending on the model year, you’ll find either a 1.5L petrol or diesel engine — the latter boasting outstanding fuel economy at just 4.1L/100km.

4. Volkswagen Polo Vivo

A South African staple, the Polo Vivo is well-built and retains value over time. Entry-level second-hand models can be found for under R140 000, offering a solid mix of efficiency, durability, and comfort.

5. Toyota Etios

Known for its low maintenance costs and long-term reliability, the Toyota Etios is another dependable option. It’s ideal for daily driving and often found in the used market well within the budget range.

6. Kia Picanto

Compact, stylish, and economical, the Picanto is a great urban commuter. Older models offer great value and typically come with small-capacity petrol engines that are easy on fuel and insurance.

7. Renault Kwid

While it may be entry-level, the Renault Kwid offers impressive features for its price point. Lightweight and frugal, it delivers around 4.7L/100km, making it a strong candidate for city drivers.

8. Datsun Go

The Datsun Go is among the most affordable hatchbacks on the market — both new and used. While basic, it covers all the essentials and is light on the wallet in terms of fuel and upkeep.

9. Chevrolet Spark

Though Chevrolet exited the SA market, parts and servicing for the Spark are still widely available. This compact hatch is dependable and offers decent value in the used market.

10. Honda Brio

Reliable and surprisingly spacious for its size, the Honda Brio is a smart pick for those who want practicality without overspending. It’s known for its fuel economy and smooth performance.

In today’s tight economy, buying new isn’t always the smartest financial move. Thankfully, the used car market in South Africa is full of excellent choices that don’t compromise on reliability or affordability. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, student, or just looking to downsize, these pre-owned cars under R140 000 deliver solid value and peace of mind.
