EFF Demands Justice for Cwecwe Regarding Alleged Rape as Malema Visits Grieving Family in Matatiele

South Africa has been deeply affected by the heartbreaking case of Cwecwe (7-year-old girl), who is alleged to have been raped at Matatiele in Eastern Cape. This incident has caused widespread public outrage. Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters visited the family to demand justice. The EFF’s involvement in the case and its calls for transparency are becoming increasingly important as the outcry grows.

Matatiele: A community in shock: What happened?

Cwecwe became a tragic example of South Africa’s failures to protect children. The incident, which occurred at Bergview College in Matatiele and was allegedly committed by a child abuser, remained under the radar for a long time until public outrage forced the authorities to take action. Cwecwe and his family were devastated by this unimaginable crime.

The case received much-needed attention when Julius Malema visited the family at the beginning of May 2025. The EFF played a key role in making sure that the voices of both the family and community were heard and called for justice and accountability.

Julius Malema Supports the Family and Calls for Justice

Julius Malema made it clear during his visit that he was committed to supporting Cwecwe and his family. It was more than a symbolic visit; Malema’s trip to Matatiele was an action-oriented call to arms. Malema has spoken out about the importance of greater accountability and transparency in protecting children. In his own words:

“We must take action against those who victimize our children. We cannot continue to allow tragedies like this. We have no future if we can’t protect our children. “

In his statement, the EFF leader stressed the urgency of the matter. He also emphasized that it is not a case isolated but part of an ongoing crisis affecting South Africa’s children. His call for justice is echoed by the public, who demand swift action from the authorities.

Social media uproar and public outcry

The case went viral quickly, igniting a national movement with the hashtag #JusticeForCwecwe. Social media was ablaze with outrage as thousands of South Africans demanded justice for the victim. Citizens expressed their anger at the slow pace and apparent lack of accountability of the relevant institutions.

Social media has become a powerful tool to amplify the voices of those who seek justice. People are calling not only for the perpetrators’ accountability, but also systemic reforms in order to prevent future incidents.

What is being done to investigate?

The South African Police Service (SAPS), as public pressure increased, intensified its investigation into the alleged sexual assault. The Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit is in charge of the investigation, and a number of suspects have been identified. Authorities have taken DNA samples and have promised to investigate every angle.

Senzo Mchunu, Minister of Police, assured the nation that justice would be done.

“We want to let the nation know that justice will be served. The law will be applied to those found guilty. “

The investigation is still ongoing, but the case has already raised questions about the protection of children in South Africa and the effectiveness with which the law enforcement agencies deal with serious crimes.

Bergview College’s Education Department and its role

This incident has also brought Bergview College to the forefront, the place where the alleged attack occurred. The Eastern Cape Department of Education initially announced that the school’s registration would be revoked. After further discussion, the decision has been reversed. The school was heavily criticized for failing to provide a secure environment for students and for not cooperating with authorities.

This case highlights an important issue in South Africa’s educational system: the need for better policies and oversight to ensure children’s safety. This case has renewed calls for reforms in education that will improve child protection and hold schools accountable for the welfare of students.

AfriForum: The Role of Civil Society

AfriForum is a prominent civil society organisation that has joined the conversation and expressed concerns over the handling of this case. Gerrie Nel – the legal director of the organisation – criticised the authorities over the handling of public statements. This was particularly true in relation to the false accusations made against the principal at Bergview College. Nel remarked:

“The public conviction based on political agendas and social media undermines the rule law. The law enforcement authorities must be allowed to carry out their duties without interference. “

AfriForum also demanded an apology from Senzo Mchunu, the Police Minister for the handling of the case. This is especially true in relation to the public smear against the principal.

Justice and Systemic Change

Cwecwe’s case has sparked a national conversation about the safety and importance of justice for cases of gender-based abuse. Along with civil society, the EFF has called for immediate reforms in order to improve child safety and ensure accountability within justice.

Voices calling for change are becoming louder. They demand that schools and government take swift and decisive action to prevent similar tragedies from occurring again. Julius Malema, the EFF and other leaders have pledged to not rest until justice has been served. Their commitment to fight for the safety of South Africa’s children has touched a nerve with the public.
