Gauteng braces for flooding, hail, and heavy rain as severe thunderstorms sweep across the province this week
Severe Thunderstorms Alert: Gauteng residents are on high alert as a cut-off low (COL) weather system moves across the country, bringing with it severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and the potential for widespread flooding. The warning, issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), comes as many people are returning to the province after the Easter long weekend.
What to Expect This Week
According to Gauteng Weather, central and southern parts of the province will be hardest hit, with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers expected throughout Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly across the province from Wednesday onwards, recovering slowly by the weekend.
“Alert: The SA Weather Service has issued a warning for the possibility of severe thunderstorms in central and Southern Gauteng on Wednesday,” Gauteng Weather confirmed.
Weather forecasts predict rainfall exceeding 50 mm, particularly in the eastern regions, raising the risk of flooding of roads, informal settlements, and low-lying infrastructure. There is also a high chance of hail, which could cause damage to property and vehicles.
Impact on Surrounding Provinces
While Gauteng will experience the brunt of the storm, the Free State and North West provinces are also expected to suffer. SAWS warns of possible livestock and infrastructure losses due to flash floods and intense thunderstorms.
In an unusual twist for late April, snowfalls are predicted over the Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, a direct result of the cold air mass linked to the COL system.
