Today’s Weather Alert

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued its weather forecast for Thursday, 17 April 2025, and while there are no severe impact-based weather alerts, South Africans should brace for a mix of partly cloudy skies, isolated thundershowers, and extremely high fire danger conditions in specific regions. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what to expect in your province today.

The day will bring mostly partly cloudy conditions across the country. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. Although no severe weather warnings have been issued, there are important fire danger alerts for residents in the Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Fire Danger Warnings:

SAWS has warned of extremely high fire danger conditions for the following areas:

  • Richtersveld Local Municipality in the Northern Cape
  • Cederberg and Bergrivier Local Municipalities in the Western Cape

These regions should avoid any open flames or activities that may trigger fires, as the dry, warm conditions create an elevated risk. Residents are advised to report any signs of smoke or fire to local authorities immediately.

Provincial Weather Forecasts:

Gauteng:

Expect partly cloudy and cool weather with isolated showers and thundershowers throughout the day.

  • UVB sunburn index: High – Sunscreen and protective clothing are essential if you plan to be outdoors.

Mpumalanga:

Morning fog patches will develop over the Highveld, followed by cloudy and cool conditions with isolated thundershowers.

  • Keep visibility concerns in mind for morning travel.

Limpopo:

Morning fog will also affect the north and central parts, with the rest of the day being cloudy to warm and punctuated by isolated thundershowers.

North West Province:

Residents can expect a partly cloudy day that is cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east. The western region will remain fine.

Free State:

Mostly fine and cool, except for the eastern parts where morning fog is expected.

  • A relatively calm day, ideal for outdoor tasks once the fog clears.

Northern Cape:

A mixed bag of weather here, with morning fog in the extreme south-east, giving way to fine and warm conditions overall. The western regions will be hot, increasing the fire risk.

Western Cape:

Morning fog is expected in central parts, followed by partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions. It will clear up by afternoon.

  • Hot temperatures are forecast for Matzikama and Bergrivier municipalities.
  • UVB sunburn index: High – Sun safety is crucial.

Eastern Cape (Western Half):

Cloudy and cool conditions are expected throughout the day, particularly in the morning.

Eastern Cape (Eastern Half):

A cloudy and cool day with isolated showers and rain along the coast, while the northern parts may see partly cloudy skies.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Morning fog over the western interior will clear to reveal partly cloudy and cool weather, with isolated showers and rain in the east and cloudier skies in the west.

  • UVB sunburn index: High – Protective measures against sun exposure are recommended.

Safety Tips for Today:

  • For rain and thundershowers:
    • Avoid outdoor activities during storms.
    • Drive with caution on wet roads.
    • Secure outdoor items that could be damaged or pose a risk in windy weather.
  • For fire danger areas:
    • Avoid lighting fires, braais, or discarding cigarette butts in open areas.
    • Have an emergency plan in place, especially in rural or farming communities.
    • Keep fire extinguishers and hoses accessible if you’re in a high-risk zone.
  • For high UVB regions:
    • Wear sunscreen with SPF 30+
    • Use sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
    • Stay in the shade during peak sunlight hours (10 AM – 3 PM)

Thursday, 17 April, brings a classic mix of autumn weather across South Africa – from refreshing thundershowers in the northeast to dry heat and fire risks in the west. While the day is mostly mild and manageable, staying updated on local conditions and taking appropriate precautions will ensure your safety and comfort.

Stay informed with your local weather forecasts and follow updates from the South African Weather Service to keep your plans in check.
