NSFAS Allowance Not Paid? Here’s What Could Be the Problem

Big changes are coming for South African students who rely on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). In 2025, the government announced a major increase in NSFAS allowances, helping students better cope with rising living costs and academic expenses.

If you’re a student, parent, or educator, understanding what this means for you is crucial. Here’s a detailed breakdown of everything you need to know about the 2025 NSFAS allowance update.

Why the NSFAS Allowance Increase Matters

Higher education has never been cheap, and with inflation driving up the price of food, rent, and transport, students are feeling the pressure more than ever.

To ensure students can study without constantly worrying about their finances, the Department of Higher Education and Training has stepped in with updated NSFAS allowance figures for 2025. These increases aim to provide meaningful relief and promote academic success.

What’s Changing? NSFAS Allowance Increases for 2025

The South African Government’s official statement outlines several key adjustments for both university and TVET college students.

University Students

  • Accommodation:
    • Students in catered residences in metro areas: R65,993 per year
    • Non-catered residence students: R56,633 per year
  • Living Allowance:
    • R17,160 annually (paid monthly to help with food, transport, and daily needs)
  • Personal Care:
    • R3,167 per year to support hygiene and self-care items
  • Learning Materials:
    • A once-off R5,678 to buy textbooks and academic supplies

TVET College Students

TVET students will benefit from one of the largest increases:

  • Annual Total Allowance: Up from R10,000 to R14,600 — that’s a 46% increase!

This substantial boost has been welcomed by many in the education sector. Experts believe this could reduce dropout rates by easing the financial burden on students from low-income households.

Extra Support for Students Living with Disabilities

NSFAS continues its efforts to ensure inclusive education. Students with disabilities will receive additional funding in 2025:

  • Human Support: R52,000 per year
  • Assistive Devices: R54,080, plus R10,000 annually for maintenance and repairs

Higher Health SA and other advocacy groups are working closely with NSFAS to ensure this funding reaches students who need it most.

NSFAS Payment Schedule: What to Expect

To ensure a smoother rollout, NSFAS made a second upfront payment to universities in early March 2025. This allowed institutions to process and disburse March allowances by 7 March.

TVET colleges received funding to cover two months’ worth of student allowances starting 7 March, provided their student registration data was submitted and verified on time.

The payment process this year has shown noticeable improvements compared to previous years, with fewer delays and administrative hiccups.

Got Rejected? Here’s How to Appeal

If your 2025 NSFAS application was unsuccessful, don’t panic—there’s still hope. Students have 30 days from the date of their rejection to submit an appeal.

To lodge an appeal, log in to the NSFAS portal and upload the required documents. Don’t wait until the last minute!

Why These Changes Matter for Student Success

Research by Universities South Africa (USAf) highlights a strong link between financial support and academic success. When students don’t have to stress about rent or transport, they can focus more on their studies.

The 2025 NSFAS increases mean:

  • Better access to quality housing
  • More reliable meals and transport
  • The ability to afford books and digital resources

In short, students now have a better shot at thriving in higher education.

Room for Improvement

While these updates are promising, challenges remain:

  • Some universities still face delays in processing allowances
  • Accommodation caps don’t always reflect real costs in urban areas like Johannesburg
  • Students continue to call for clearer, faster communication from NSFAS

Student leaders from institutions like Wits and the University of Pretoria have called for more consistent engagement between NSFAS and student bodies to resolve these issues.

Planning for 2026? Take Note

If you’re finishing matric this year or planning to apply to university in 2026, this is your cue to start preparing early. With stronger financial aid options available, the path to higher education is opening up for more students.

Start by:

  • Checking your eligibility on the NSFAS website
  • Gathering and scanning important documents
  • Staying informed through your future institution’s announcements

A Step in the Right Direction

The 2025 NSFAS allowance increase is more than just a budget update—it’s a step toward equitable access to higher education in South Africa. With rising living costs, this extra support could make the difference between staying in school and dropping out.

Of course, the system isn’t perfect. However, with ongoing improvements and student input, NSFAS is heading in the right direction.
