Soshanguve Shooting: Seventh Victim Dies as Zimbabwean Suspect Abandons Bail in Mass Murder
SHARE

A horrific mass shooting has rocked the township of Soshanguve, located north of Pretoria. The community is in mourning. In the early morning hours of March 22nd, 2025, a violent attack against local safety patrollers escalated to a murder investigation. The death toll has now risen to seven as a 7th victim died from injuries days later in hospital.

Public scrutiny is intensifying over the Soshanguve shooting that occurred in the Marry Me settlement. The arrest of a Zimbabwean man and his multiple charges have everyone wondering: How could this tragedy have been prevented?

What happened during the Soshanguve Shooting?

The chaos started when five armed men ambushed a group of community safety patrollers in the early morning hours. Four of the victims died instantly and others were taken to the hospital in critical condition. A seventh victim died later in the day, further adding to the heartache of this community.

Many of these safety patrollers are volunteers who have been protecting their neighborhood from an ever-growing crime threat. The dedication of these safety patrollers to keep Soshanguve secure now represents the strong bond between the members of this community. Their sacrifice, however, has brought attention to the increased risks that those who work to secure their communities face.

Arresting the Zimbabwean Suspect

A 27-year-old Zimbabwean was arrested on March 24, 2025, in connection with this attack. He was charged with 6 counts of murder, 5 counts of attempted murder and 2 counts of robbery in aggravating circumstances. The suspect, during his second appearance before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court, abandoned his bail request, which only increased public interest in this case.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed his sorrow and shock at the death of the seventh victim. He said:

Yesterday, we learned of the tragedy that a second life had been lost. The families and community continue to be in deep grief. “Justice must prevail.”

Lesufi, in response to the growing concerns over safety in the region, also announced the formation of a special committee to tackle crime and improve the service delivery in Soshanguve. This initiative aims to ensure that residents feel more secure and supported in the future.

Law Enforcement’s efforts to address the situation

South African Police Service has been investigating the incident to bring those responsible to justice. Senzo Mchunu, the Police Minister of South Africa, has urged residents to remain calm and allow police to finish their investigation. In a statement to the public, he stated:

The police are working hard to find all the suspects in this tragic incident. We need the help of the community to bring justice.

Many residents are frustrated that police presence has decreased in Soshanguve and its surrounding area. Many residents feel the police response was too late and question the effectiveness of the community safety measures. Authorities are still focused on making sure that the incident has been thoroughly investigated and that those responsible for the violence have to be held accountable.

The Community is Outraged and Supportive

Residents of Soshanguve have expressed their outrage and sadness on social media. Many question the government’s capability to protect communities in danger from increasing crime.

A local resident, Thabi M, who was present at the scene:

These safety patrollers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. Their families now have to grieve. “It’s not fair, and we must make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again.”

Local community groups, faith-based organizations, and NGOs rallied in response to this outpouring of anger to offer support to grieving families. There are efforts underway to provide trauma counselling, financial aid, and a forum for affected residents.

The Political Pressure for Action is Building

The tragedy that occurred in Soshanguve put significant pressure on local authorities to act quickly on crime prevention. The Democratic Alliance, an opposition party, has called on the local government to strengthen community safety initiatives and more effectively target policing.

Gleichzeitig, organisations of the civil society demand an independent investigation into the circumstances which allowed the crime. They call for long-term measures to prevent violent incidents like this from occurring again.

Premier Lesufi is committed to returning to Soshanguve to meet again with community leaders and police to discuss future plans.

What’s next for Soshanguve

The investigation continues, and the suspect is still in custody. Soshanguve’s residents are left with difficult questions. How can law enforcement and the government better protect communities such as theirs? What can be done to stop this violence from taking innocent lives?

The families of victims are grieving, but their grief has sparked a demand for justice and reform. We must not forget the lives lost at Soshanguve, and we all have a responsibility to make sure that their deaths weren’t in vain.
