Ethiopian nationals, including minors, flee captivity in a suspected human trafficking case in Johannesburg’s Lombardy East.
Authorities in Johannesburg are investigating a shocking case of suspected human trafficking after dozens of Ethiopian nationals, including children, escaped captivity from a suburban house in Lombardy East.
32 Escapees Found, Many Still Missing
According to police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, 32 of the escapees—aged between 13 and 24—have been found so far. Many of them were discovered barefoot and half-naked, reinforcing suspicions that they were held against their will.
Witnesses reported seeing individuals running frantically through the streets after breaking free from the house. Police suspect more victims may still be unaccounted for.
Human Trafficking Cases on the Rise
This incident is not an isolated case. In January 2025, Johannesburg police rescued 26 undocumented Ethiopian nationals held in similar conditions. Last August, authorities found over 80 Ethiopians confined in inhumane conditions in another city suburb.
Three Ethiopian nationals have been arrested in connection with this latest case, with authorities suspecting a larger trafficking network operating in South Africa.
Growing Concerns Over Migrant Exploitation
South Africa’s economic opportunities attract many undocumented migrants from countries such as Ethiopia, Malawi, and Lesotho. However, many fall prey to traffickers who exploit them for forced labour or extortion.
Masondo expressed concern over the increasing number of such cases, stating, “It is a concern for us that people are being brought to our country… and kept in houses here against their own will.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police are continuing their search for other missing escapees and investigating potential links to organized crime. Authorities urge residents to report suspicious activity as law enforcement works to dismantle human trafficking networks.
