Durban Beach Closures: Full List of Affected and Safe Beaches for April 2025

With the April school holidays fast approaching, Durban residents and holidaymakers should be aware of recent beach closures due to poor water quality. The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that five beaches are currently closed for swimming, raising concerns about E. coli contamination and its impact on tourism and public health.

If you’re planning a beach outing, here’s everything you need to know about which Durban beaches to avoid and where you can still enjoy a safe swim this holiday season.

Which Durban Beaches Are Closed?

As of March 13, 2025, the following five Durban beaches are closed for swimming due to unsafe water conditions:

  • Country Club Beach
  • Thekwini Beach
  • Laguna Beach
  • Reunion Beach
  • Doonside Beach

The municipality has stated that these closures are a temporary measure, and updates will be provided as conditions improve. Although swimming is prohibited, other beach activities such as sunbathing, beach games, and jogging are still allowed.

Why Are These Beaches Closed?

The primary reason for these closures is high levels of E. coli bacteria in the water, which can pose serious health risks, including gastrointestinal illnesses, skin infections, and respiratory issues. E. coli contamination is often caused by sewage spills, stormwater runoff, and pollution, particularly after heavy rains.

Environmental activists and concerned citizens have called on the eThekwini Municipality to take stronger action in addressing water pollution and improving infrastructure to prevent frequent beach closures.

Which Durban Beaches Are Open and Safe?

Fortunately, 18 beaches in Durban remain open for swimming, with water quality deemed safe by the municipality. These beaches are monitored regularly to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Here is a list of Durban beaches currently open for swimming:

  • Point Beach
  • Umdloti Main Beach
  • Bronze Beach
  • Umhlanga Main Beach
  • Umgababa Beach
  • Winklespruit Beach
  • Toti Main Beach
  • Pipeline Beach
  • Westbrook Beach
  • uShaka Beach
  • Addington Beach
  • Brighton Beach
  • North Beach
  • Bay of Plenty Beach
  • South Beach
  • Battery Beach
  • Anstey’s Beach
  • Wedge Beach

These beaches are open daily between 06:00 and 18:30. Visitors are encouraged to check for updates before heading out, as conditions can change depending on weather patterns and pollution levels.

Public Swimming Pools Are Also Open

In addition to the open beaches, the municipality has confirmed that 40 public swimming pools across Durban are available for use. These pools provide a great alternative for families looking to cool off during the holiday season.

Some of the most popular public swimming pools include:

  • Rachel Finlayson Pool (South Beach)
  • Durban North Pool
  • Bayview Pool
  • Westville Pool
  • KwaMashu G Pool

Public swimming pools operate from 06:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and 09:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays.

What Should Be Done About Durban’s Water Quality?

The issue of polluted beaches in Durban is not new. Environmental groups have repeatedly urged authorities to improve sewage infrastructure, regulate industrial waste disposal, and implement stronger water treatment measures to prevent further contamination.

Residents and beachgoers can also play their part by:

  • Avoiding littering and plastic pollution on beaches.
  • Reporting sewage leaks and pollution to the municipality.
  • Supporting environmental organizations working on water conservation and clean-up efforts.

Final Thoughts: Plan Your Beach Visits Wisely

While some beaches are temporarily closed, there are still plenty of safe swimming spots to enjoy this April. If you’re planning a trip to the coast, make sure to stay updated on beach conditions and choose a safe location for your family’s holiday fun.

For the latest updates on Durban beach closures and water quality reports, visit the eThekwini Municipality website or follow their official social media pages.
