Ever wondered how the history of our communities shapes them today? In Sharpeville, Gauteng the past is not just a story, but a dialogue that inspires change, hope and unity. Sharpeville Is Not a Massacre invites you to reflect, engage and celebrate the courage and sacrifices of those who fought to achieve equality, freedom and justice.

Sharpeville will host a number of inspiring events in March. These include the Human Rights Dialogue; the Heroes Fun Run and 5km Walk; and the Block Party. The activities are designed to combine education, entertainment, and fitness in a way to encourage everyone to connect with the past while also contributing to a shared vision for a better tomorrow.

Sharpeville events are a great way to see how history, human rights and community spirit intersect. We’ll explore what makes these events so important — and why you should put them on your March calendar.

Sharpeville from a new perspective: “Not a massacre, but a turning point”

The Sharpeville Massacre is often called the tragic event that occurred on March 21, 1960 in Sharpeville. The Sharpeville is Not a Massacre campaign challenges us to rethink this narrative. This movement encourages us to not only acknowledge the tragedy and loss of that day but to also remember it as a turning point in South Africa’s fight for justice.

This initiative encourages us to see beyond the sadness and celebrate the strength and resilience of those who fought for their rights. This is a day for South Africa to reflect on its progress, but also acknowledge that the fight for equal rights continues.

Understanding history from a new perspective has changed the way I see the world. Sharpeville Is Not a Massacre aims to change the conversation by giving new meaning to a chapter of South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

Tlong Sekolong Human Rights Dialogue – Where Ideas Meet Action

You know how powerful the right conversation can be if you’ve ever had a group of people sit around the table to discuss the big questions in life. The Tlong Sekolong Human Rights Dialogue is a unique event. This event, hosted by Vaal University Technology and SiNaM, brings together an expert panel to discuss the impact destination branding has on communities, culture and inclusivity.

This isn’t about marketing. Human rights are at stake. The event will examine the role branding plays in creating a sense of belonging, and how it can raise the voices of those who are often ignored. This conversation will encourage us to consider how individuals and communities can use branding in a way that empowers and uplifts others rather than just selling a product.

  • Event Date: 20 March 2025
  • Event time: from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Location: Vaal Institute of Technology (VUT), Andries Potgieter Blvd, Vanderbijlpark South Africa
  • Entry: Free
  • Age: Adults
  • Region: Sedibeng

The most powerful way to engage in a discussion is not only by listening to expert opinions but also by participating in the conversation yourself. If you are passionate about social justice, human rights, or the intersection between tourism and culture, then this is a dialogue you will not want to miss.

Register early to avoid disappointment.

Visit Tlong Sekolong Human Rights Dialogue for more information.

Heroes 8km Run & 5km Walk: A Celebration Of Resilience

This year, the 8km Fun Run will be held along with the 5 km Fun Walk. Participants will take to Sharpeville’s streets on Human Rights Day to honor the heroes who stood up for justice in 1960, even if it cost them their lives.

Some will enjoy the challenge of the 8km run, while others prefer the slower pace and space to reflect. Each step pays tribute to the people who fought so hard for our rights today.

It’s a powerful experience to take part in such an event. I know this from my participation in other commemorative runs. This event is a combination of physical activity, and emotional reflection and brings you closer to the cause that you are supporting.

  • Event Date: 21 March 2025
  • Event time: from 6:00 AM until 10:00 AM
  • Location: Zwane Street, Sharpeville, Vereeniging, South Africa
  • Entry: Free
  • Age: Adults
  • Region: Sedibeng

Join the “Put Yourself in Their Shoes Movement” to make each step count in honor of those who have fought for freedom and human rights.

Visit Heroes Fun Run 8km and 5km Walk for more information and to register.

Celebrate Freedom, Unity and Culture at the Block Party

What better way to celebrate the end of a fitness and reflection day than a lively Block party at Sharpeville? This event will bring together some of the best South African entertainment, from electrifying live music to electrifying DJs. This is a great opportunity to connect with friends and enjoy delicious food.

As night falls, an impressive fireworks display will illuminate the sky. This display symbolises unity, freedom and equality for everyone.

  • Event Date: 21 March 2025
  • Event time: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Location: 8770 Sefatsa Street, Sharpeville, Vereeniging, South Africa
  • Entry: Paid (Starting Price: R150)
  • Age: Adults
  • Region: Sedibeng

The Block Party is an excellent way to celebrate all that Sharpeville has to offer.
