The N6 Crash has led to a complete road closure, causing major disruptions and necessitating significant traffic rerouting. A devastating bus and truck collision on the N6 highway has claimed the lives of 10 individuals and left over 31 injured.
Emergency Response and N6 Crash Details
The fatal accident occurred approximately 15 kilometres south of Reddersburg on the way to Smithfield, early on Wednesday morning. Emergency response teams were dispatched at 3:50 AM, arriving swiftly to manage the dire situation.
Sipho Towa, Chairperson of the Free State Road Incident Management System (RIMS) and District Manager of EMS Communications, confirmed the severity of the tragedy.
“It is still early to determine the exact cause of the accident,” Towa told The Citizen.
The majority of those who lost their lives were adult females, with one minor among the deceased. Seven critically injured individuals were transported to various hospitals for urgent medical care. Initially, authorities estimated five fatalities, but this number rose to 10 as more information became available.
Traffic Disruption and Alternate Routes
The bus and truck collision has forced a total road closure on the N6, leading to extensive traffic rerouting.
Towa outlined the alternate routes for travellers:
- Vehicles departing from Reddersburg must take the R717 towards Edenburg, covering a 27-kilometre detour.
- From Edenburg, drivers should follow the N1 to Springfontein (a 69.5-kilometre stretch) before taking the R715 to Smithfield, ultimately reconnecting with the N6 after travelling an additional 103 kilometres.
- Those originating from Smithfield should take the R715 to Springfontein and then the N1 to Bloemfontein, a 140-kilometre alternative route.
