Celebrate National Gardens Week with Free Entry

Themed “Grow Your Joy,” this year’s National Gardens Week encourages the public to immerse themselves in nature, promoting mindfulness, relaxation, and appreciation for South Africa’s rich biodiversity.

“Whether you’re walking through one of our gardens or participating in one of the many activities, National Gardens Week is a chance to grow your joy and embrace the healing power of nature,” says Nontsikelelo Mpulo, SANBI’s Director of Marketing Communications and Commercialisation.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore stunning national botanical gardens across the country, from Kirstenbosch in Cape Town to Walter Sisulu in Johannesburg, as well as SANBI’s zoological sites, including the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria and the Mokopane Biodiversity Centre in Limpopo.

Why National Gardens Week Matters

Belgian-American author May Sarton once described a garden as “an instrument of grace,” a place where life slows down and patience is nurtured.

According to SANBI CEO Shonisani Munzhedzi, South Africa’s botanical gardens and zoos play a critical role in conservation. “Currently, 15% of the species housed at the zoo are classified as threatened due to habitat loss, poaching, and human- wildlife conflict,” he explains. These green spaces not only protect endangered species but also serve as living classrooms where visitors can learn about the importance of conservation and biodiversity.

With more than 95,000 unique species, South Africa’s gardens are essential in preserving this natural heritage, making National Gardens Week an important initiative for both environmental awareness and public enjoyment.

Activities to Enjoy During National Gardens Week

National botanical gardens and zoological facilities will host a variety of engaging activities, making it an exciting outing for visitors of all ages. Expect:

  • Daily Guided Garden Tours – Learn about indigenous plants and landscapes.
  • Plant Sales – Take a piece of the garden home with you.
  • Park Runs & Walks – Get active while enjoying scenic routes.
  • Yoga Sessions – Practice mindfulness in a peaceful natural setting.
  • Educational Conservation Talks – Understand how gardens and zoos protect biodiversity.

Tips for Visiting a Botanical Garden

To make the most of your visit during National Gardens Week, consider these useful tips:

✔ Wear comfortable clothing & shoes – Botanical gardens often involve plenty of walking.

✔ Bring a hat & sunscreen – Many gardens have open areas with limited shade.

✔ Pack a picnic – Some gardens allow visitors to enjoy meals in designated areas.

✔ Carry a reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated while exploring.

✔ Bring binoculars – Spot birds and small wildlife hidden in the foliage.

✔ Check for scheduled events – Look up specific activities happening in your chosen garden.

Explore South Africa’s Stunning Botanical Gardens

From the coastal beauty of Kirstenbosch to the waterfalls of Walter Sisulu, each SANBI garden offers a unique experience. Here are some must-visit gardens:

  • Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Cape Town) – Home to the famous Boomslang Canopy Walk.
  • Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (Johannesburg) – Features the stunning Witpoortjie Waterfall.
  • Free State National Botanical Garden (Bloemfontein) – Showcases South Africa’s highveld vegetation.
  • KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden (Pietermaritzburg) – A paradise of cycads and birdlife.

Make the Most of National Gardens Week

With no entry fees during National Gardens Week, there’s no better time to reconnect with nature, learn about conservation, and enjoy South Africa’s breathtaking green spaces. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, an educational outing, or a fun day with family, the country’s botanical gardens and zoos offer something for everyone.

Mark your calendar for 10–16 March, and take advantage of this incredible opportunity to grow your joy in nature!
