Limpopo Soldiers Killed in DRC: Everything You Need To Know

The people of Limpopo are preparing to say their final goodbyes to seven South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who tragically lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The brave soldiers were among the 14 South Africans who perished in conflict with the M23 rebels earlier this year.

Honouring the Fallen Soldiers

Funeral services for the soldiers will be held across various Limpopo communities, with Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba leading the provincial executive council in providing support to the bereaved families. The funerals will take place on Saturday and Sunday in the following locations:

  • Botlokwa
  • Burgersfort (Moroke)
  • Schoonord
  • Ga-Sekororo
  • Khubvi
  • Mashishimale
  • Ga-Matlala (Ga-Mokgokong)

Last weekend, an eighth soldier from Limpopo was also laid to rest in the Vhembe region.

Community and Government Support

As the province mourns, local leaders and government officials have extended their support to the affected families. Dr. Ramathuba called on communities to rally behind the grieving families, emphasizing the importance of unity in times of sorrow.

“We are in a time of mourning, and the families need our support. We will be there to ensure they are not alone during this tragic period. We also express our deep gratitude for the selfless service these soldiers provided to our country,” said Ramathuba.

Mayor’s Financial Support for Bereaved Family

The Mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality, Eddy Maila, has stepped forward to assist the family of Tseke Moffat Molapo, a soldier from the SA Infantry Battalion.

Molapo will be buried on Saturday in Moroke village, Burgersfort. In a show of solidarity, Mayor Maila donated groceries worth R5,500 and two cows valued at R22,500 to support the funeral arrangements.

“The loss of a soldier is a loss to the entire community. We recognize Moffat’s sacrifice in ensuring peace and stability. This is our way of showing appreciation,” said Thabiso Mokoena, a manager in Maila’s office.

The Cost of Service and Sacrifice

The SANDF soldiers stationed in the DRC are part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission, tasked with stabilizing the region amidst ongoing conflict. The M23 rebel group, known for its violent insurgency, has been clashing with peacekeeping forces, leading to tragic casualties.

The recent loss of 14 South African soldiers has sparked nationwide mourning, with many calling for enhanced safety measures for deployed troops. Families and government officials have emphasized the need for continued support for the surviving soldiers and their loved ones.

A Nation in Mourning

South Africans across the country have been paying tribute to the fallen soldiers. Memorial services have been held in various provinces, and the SANDF has ensured that the soldiers receive full military honors during their burials.

The loss of these brave men serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by South African troops in conflict zones. While their deaths are deeply tragic, their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Final Farewell

As the funerals take place this weekend, communities in Limpopo will gather to mourn, remember, and celebrate the lives of these courageous soldiers. Their sacrifice in the pursuit of peace will always be honored, and their legacy will live on in the hearts of South Africans.
