The SA Weather Service (SAWS) is grappling with the aftermath of a cyberattack that has compromised its information communication and technology (ICT) systems. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, has severely disrupted the organization’s ability to deliver critical weather forecasts and services for marine and aviation industries.
A Ransom with No Terms
Oupa Segalwe, SAWS’ senior manager for communication and stakeholder relations, confirmed on Wednesday that the hackers have demanded a ransom. However, no specific terms or monetary amount have been set. The attack follows a failed hacking attempt earlier over the weekend.
Despite the disruption, SAWS has mobilized alternative measures to ensure the public and key sectors like aviation and maritime operations continue to receive vital weather updates.
Disrupted Systems, Alternative Solutions
The attack has affected weather data collection systems, which are ICT-based. Nevertheless, SAWS has implemented alternative methods for gathering data to continue issuing severe weather warnings and forecasts. For now, weather updates are being distributed via email and social media platforms as the organization works on restoring full system functionality.
Segalwe shared that email services have been restored, and a dedicated team of engineers and cybersecurity experts is working tirelessly to bring systems back online. Although the website remains down, crucial weather information is being relayed to aviation and marine authorities through alternative channels.

The attack has also affected critical marine and aviation services, as SAWS cannot rely on its usual seamless systems for communicating weather data. However, alternative methods have been adopted to ensure minimal disruption. “The SAWS understands the significance of its services in saving lives and property from hazardous weather impacts,” said Segalwe, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to overcoming the challenge.
