  • Quick Tips for Replacing Your Smart ID

1. Complete a BI-9 Form

If you haven’t previously submitted your fingerprints, the first step is to fill out Form BI-9, which is required for identity verification.

  • Make sure to include any necessary documents, such as a marriage certificate if your surname has changed.
  • All documents must be up to date and certified.

2. Pay the Reissue Fee

The cost for replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged Smart ID is R140.

  • Keep the receipt as proof of payment—it will be needed later.

3. Report the Loss or Theft to the Police

It is important to report a stolen Smart ID card to the police.

  • Obtain an affidavit as proof, which may be required during the reapplication process.

4. Apply for a Temporary Identification Certificate (TIC)

While waiting for your Smart ID card, you can apply for a Temporary Identification Certificate (TIC). This certificate serves as interim proof of identity.

  • Visit any Department of Home Affairs office.
  • Your fingerprints will be verified before the TIC is issued.

5. Correcting Errors in Your Smart ID

If your Smart ID contains errors, corrections can be made free of charge.

  • Provide proof of the correct information, such as a birth certificate.
  • Submit completed Forms BI-9 and BI-309 with two colour ID photographs, unless applying at a smartcard office, where photos are taken digitally.

6. First-Time Applicants: What You Need to Know

For South African citizens or permanent residents aged 16 or older, the process for applying for a Smart ID for the first time involves:

  • Completing Form BI-9 in black ink.
  • Providing a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  • Bringing two identical colour photographs (for temporary IDs only).

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with a valid ID. Naturalised citizens need copies of their naturalisation or permanent residency certificates.

7. Use eHome Affairs for Online Applications

Skip the long queues by applying for a Smart ID online through eHome Affairs.

  • Confirm with your nearest Home Affairs office if they use the live capture system, as this is required for issuing Smart IDs.

8. Track Your Application Status

Stay informed about the progress of your application by including your cellphone number during the application process.

  • For SMS updates, send “ID” followed by your ID number to 32551. Note that each SMS costs R1.

9. Visit the Department of Home Affairs

Before heading to a Department of Home Affairs office, check their website to confirm which services are available.

  • Some offices may require you to bring your own photographs.
  • Requirements can change without notice, so always stay informed by visiting the official Department of Home Affairs website.

Quick Tips for Replacing Your Smart ID

  • Keep a copy of your ID card stored securely for reference.
  • Act quickly to avoid delays in accessing essential services that require ID.
