Thirty-two illegal miners rescued from a mine shaft near Stilfontein, North West, are now hospitalized under heavy police and private security guard at Tshepong/Klerksdorp Hospital. The miners, who are reportedly in stable condition, are being monitored closely after suffering from dehydration during their time underground.
Tshegofatso Mothibedi, spokesperson for the North West Department of Health, confirmed that all hospital protocols have been enhanced to handle this unique case, given the allegations of violence and potential escapes.
“In the ward where they are isolated, we have beefed up security measures by working with both police officials and our hospital security team to ensure no breaches occur,” Mothibedi said.
Search Intensifies for Escaped Kingpin
The crackdown on illegal mining in the region has gained urgency after the dramatic escape of James Neo Tshoaeli, alias “Tiger.” Tshoaeli, a Lesotho national and alleged mastermind behind illegal mining activities, reportedly escaped police custody after being rescued from mine shaft 11 last week. Authorities have labelled him dangerous and are appealing to the public for assistance in locating him.
North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, expressed frustration over the incident.
“The escape of Tiger is unacceptable. We urge the community to come forward with any information about his whereabouts,” said Morweng. He also warned that any police officers found aiding fugitives like Tshoaeli would face harsh consequences.
Dehydration Among Hospitalized Miners
Health officials reported that dehydration is the primary concern among the hospitalized miners. According to Mothibedi, medical assessments conducted by doctors and nurses revealed that a lack of water was the main cause of their physical condition.
Despite these challenges, the Department of Health assured the public that the miners are receiving top-tier medical care under strict security measures.
Tightened Security at Tshepong/Klerksdorp Hospital
The hospital has implemented premium security measures, with law enforcement officials stationed around the isolated ward. Visitors are subject to thorough checks to maintain the safety of both patients and staff.
