Prepare for Severe Weather Conditions: Heavy Rain, Flooding, and Safety Measures

Tshwane residents are urged to brace for severe weather conditions after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level four warning for disruptive rain and potential flooding on Monday. The City of Tshwane Emergency Services (COT) has cautioned residents to prepare for heavy rainfall, which could cause significant disruptions and risks.

Yellow Level 4 Weather Warning Issued by SAWS

The SAWS warning predicts widespread showers and thundershowers, leading to heavy rainfall across Tshwane and other parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. According to Lindsay Mnguni, spokesperson for the COT, the disruptive rain poses an elevated risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and susceptible roads.

“These conditions could also lead to traffic disruptions due to flooded roads, slippery surfaces, and reduced visibility. Minor to major vehicle accidents are possible, alongside localized power outages and infrastructure damage,” Mnguni warned.

To minimize risks, the COT has urged residents to observe the following safety precautions:

Stay Indoors: Avoid exposure to metal objects during thunderstorms.
Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, or streams.
Monitor Weather Updates: Stay informed through SAWS alerts and credible sources.
Emergency Contacts: Report any emergencies by calling the toll-free number 107.

“Residents must also avoid seeking shelter under trees or tall objects during a thunderstorm and be cautious of any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning,” Mnguni emphasized.

The SAWS has predicted continued heavy rainfall in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. Disruptive rainfall could result in closed roads and potential property damage in Limpopo and Mpumalanga on Monday.

Mnguni assured residents that the COT will remain on high alert to respond to any weather-related emergencies. “We strongly encourage vigilance and immediate action to report incidents. Staying informed and adhering to safety recommendations can save lives,” Mnguni said.
