All-New Suzuki DZire Unveiled with Radical Redesign, Awaiting Confirmation for South Africa

Suzuki has unveiled the fourth-generation DZire, a subcompact sedan that has established itself as a mainstay in India and other markets. Initially introduced as the Swift DZire, the model has grown beyond its hatchback roots to become a standalone vehicle with a unique identity. With this redesign, Suzuki continues to target a global market, including Africa, although Suzuki Auto South Africa has yet to confirm if this latest version will make its way to local showrooms.

Suzuki: Breaking Away from the Swift

Following the unveiling of the new Suzuki Swift at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki’s Indian division, has now taken the wraps off the latest DZire. The DZire has been built on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, the same foundation as the Swift, and maintains the sub-four-metre length that has made it popular in crowded urban settings. While its dimensions are similar to the previous version, the 2024 DZire has grown slightly taller, reaching 1,525 mm, which translates to more headroom for passengers. Despite sharing a platform with the Swift, the new DZire’s styling and features are tailored to distinguish it from its hatchback counterpart, offering buyers a unique sedan experience.

Suzuki has designed the DZire to cater to those who need compactness without compromising on space. Measuring 3,995 mm in length and offering a 2,450 mm wheelbase, the DZire is practical and maneuverable. Unlike the Swift, which has recently launched in South Africa, the DZire’s height and length are distinct, providing more roominess and a larger trunk space of 382 liters compared to the Swift’s 265 liters, making it ideal for family use.

A Fresh Exterior with Dazzling Appeal

The DZire’s styling takes a new turn with a look that Suzuki describes as “dazzling.” Key design changes include LED headlights, a restyled front grille, and bespoke side moldings. These elements give the DZire a more sophisticated and refined look that Suzuki hopes will appeal to young professionals and families. The rear design, with its sharper lines and unique taillights, hints at Honda’s older Ballade models and is a clear departure from the rounded design of the Swift.

To offer even more customization, Suzuki has introduced three new colors: Nutmeg Brown, Gallant Red, and Alluring Blue, in addition to Arctic White, Splendid Silver, Magma Grey, and Bluish Black. The car also comes in four trim levels: LXI, VXI, ZXI, and ZXI+, allowing buyers to choose the features and finishes that best suit their needs and budgets.

Interior Comfort and Advanced Tech

Inside the cabin, the DZire offers a comfortable, well-equipped experience similar to the Swift but with subtle differences. The dashboard, steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control system carry over from the Swift, ensuring a high level of comfort. Additionally, the DZire offers either a seven-inch or nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, depending on the trim level. The infotainment system is neatly integrated into a dash with imitation wood trim that gives the sedan a more premium look and feel.

For convenience, the DZire features rear air-conditioning vents, a 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, front and rear armrests, and push-button start on higher trims. A wireless smartphone charging pad, positioned at the base of the dash, adds to the functionality, offering a space that doubles as a storage compartment.

Safety features are also a strong point in the DZire, which has earned a five-star Global NCAP rating. It includes six airbags across all trim levels, a tire pressure monitoring system, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist, and, for the first time in the model’s history, a 360-degree surround-view camera system for enhanced safety and parking ease.

Performance and Efficiency with New Transmission Options

Under the hood, the DZire retains Suzuki’s 1.2-liter Z12E three-cylinder petrol engine, producing a solid 60 kW and 112 Nm of torque. For the Indian market, there’s an additional LPG variant that produces slightly reduced outputs of 51 kW and 102 Nm. Paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or Suzuki’s five-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), the engine is designed to deliver smooth, fuel-efficient driving. The AMT, marketed as Suzuki’s Automated Gear Shift (AGS), offers a blend of manual efficiency and automatic ease.

Awaiting Confirmation for the South African Market

Now on sale in India, the all-new DZire is competitively priced from Rs 679,000 (around R146,095) for the base LXI model, with the range-topping ZXI+ AGS priced at Rs 1,014,000 (approximately R218,174). The DZire has long been anticipated as an export model for Africa, but as of now, Suzuki Auto South Africa has not confirmed whether it will bring this new iteration to the local market.

If Suzuki does opt to introduce the DZire in South Africa, it could arrive in 2025, in line with the recent launch of the Swift. Currently, South African buyers have access to the third-generation DZire in two trims – GA and GL – priced from R217,900 for the GA to R254,900 for the GL AGS. With its updated styling, enhanced safety, and new tech features, the fourth-generation DZire could be a valuable addition to the South African market, filling the gap for a compact sedan that is both affordable and feature-rich.
