South Africa is set to experience another sweltering day on Friday, with high temperatures blanketing most provinces and intensifying the risk of wildfires in central and western areas. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), today’s weather and temperatures will peak between 35°C and 39°C in parts of the Northern Cape, Limpopo, and North West, while much of the country will see sunny skies and warm to hot conditions.

This weather forecast brings a mix of heat and sunshine, with relatively cooler conditions expected only along coastal regions, including parts of the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. This article provides insights on today’s weather, key fire warnings, and the upcoming heatwave advisory.

Today’s Weather Forecast

Key Weather Warnings

Extreme Fire Danger

SAWS has issued a high fire danger warning today, as dry, hot, and windy conditions raise the likelihood of fires in several regions. Areas most affected include:

  • Northern Cape: Central and eastern regions
  • Free State: Western areas
  • North West: Western parts
  • Eastern Cape: Inxuba Yethemba municipality

These areas, marked by prolonged dryness, are particularly vulnerable to fire outbreaks due to hot temperatures and prevailing winds. Residents in these regions should be vigilant, avoiding open flames, discarding cigarettes responsibly, and reporting any signs of fire immediately.

High Temperatures and Heat Safety

With temperatures soaring in various parts of the country, it’s essential to take necessary heat precautions. Make sure to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and limit sun exposure during peak afternoon hours. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks and monitor for signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness or excessive sweating.

Coastal and Inland Variations

While inland regions brace for a scorcher, coastal cities are expected to remain comparatively cooler. Cape Town, for instance, will reach a high of 25°C, dropping to a cooler 19°C by Sunday. Similarly, East London and Port Elizabeth will maintain temperatures in the low to mid-20s. These milder coastal conditions provide some respite for residents and visitors, though UV levels are expected to be high, requiring sunscreen and protective measures.

Heatwave Advisory Starting Saturday, 2 November

Looking ahead, a heatwave is predicted to hit multiple provinces over the weekend, starting Saturday and continuing until at least Monday. This extended period of elevated temperatures will impact:

  • Limpopo
  • Mpumalanga
  • Gauteng
  • Free State (excluding western and southern parts)
  • Eastern parts of North West

Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for persistent high temperatures by ensuring adequate water supplies, planning activities during cooler parts of the day, and staying informed through local weather updates. The extreme heat poses health risks, especially to young children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Ensure that pets and livestock also have access to shade and fresh water.

Practical Tips for Staying Cool and Safe

With temperatures climbing, here are some practical tips to help you stay cool and safe today:

  1. Hydrate frequently: Water is essential, especially if you’re active outdoors. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you.
  2. Dress for the weather: Lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes are ideal for hot weather.
  3. Plan outdoor activities carefully: If possible, schedule strenuous activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
  4. Use sunscreen and seek shade: High UV levels are expected today, so apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and use hats or umbrellas if you’re outside.
  5. Check on vulnerable individuals: The elderly, young children and pets are more susceptible to heat. Make sure they’re safe, hydrated, and comfortable.

Summary of Today’s Weather Forecast

South Africa is in for a predominantly hot and sunny day, with the highest temperatures affecting the Northern Cape, Limpopo, and North West. Inland cities, such as Pretoria and Bloemfontein, will see temperatures above 30°C, while coastal areas like Cape Town and Port Elizabeth experience more moderate warmth. As fire danger warnings remain in effect, residents in high-risk areas should exercise caution and report any signs of fire.

As the weekend approaches, the predicted heatwave adds urgency to today’s advisory, with multiple provinces set to experience continued heat through Monday. Stay safe, stay cool, and follow SAWS updates to remain informed about any developing weather conditions.
