Player Ratings Breakdown: Who Rose to the Occasion in Bafana's 1-1 Draw Against Congo
SHARE

The 2025 AFCON Qualifiers match between Bafana Bafana and the Republic of Congo on October 15, 2024, ended in a 1-1 draw. Here is the player ratings breakdown of those who rose to the occasion in Bafana’s draw against Congo. This was the second meeting in a span of a few days for both teams, following South Africa’s dominant 5-0 victory at home on October 11. This time, however, the game was held at the Alphonse Massamba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville, and Bafana Bafana had a more challenging outing.

South Africa vs Congo Player Ratings:

  1. Ronwen Williams (7/10): The South African captain made some critical saves throughout the game, maintaining composure against Congo’s aggressive attacks, particularly in the second half. His leadership from the back was vital in keeping the team focused.
  2. Khuliso Mudau (6/10): Mudau had a decent performance defensively, though he struggled a bit with Congo’s speedy wingers. His overlapping runs weren’t as impactful as in the previous match.
  3. Rushwin Dortley (6/10): Dortley held his ground well for most of the match but had some issues with marking on set pieces, which eventually led to Congo’s equalizing goal.
  4. Grant Kekana (7/10): Kekana was solid defensively and won several aerial duels. His positioning was generally good, helping Bafana Bafana withstand the late pressure from Congo.
  5. Aubrey Modiba (7/10): Modiba contributed well on both ends, showcasing his versatility. His crosses were a threat, and he tracked back effectively to provide defensive support.
  6. Bathusi Aubaas (6.5/10): Aubaas had a quiet game compared to his goal-scoring performance in the last match. He controlled the midfield but occasionally lost possession under pressure.
  7. Teboho Mokoena (7/10): Mokoena continued to be a central figure for Bafana Bafana. His passing and vision helped maintain the team’s rhythm, and he contributed to the buildup of South Africa’s lone goal.
  8. Themba Zwane (7.5/10): Zwane was a creative force, regularly attempting to unlock Congo’s defense with his dribbling and clever passes. He played a key role in linking up the play and setting up opportunities.
  9. Oswin Appollis (6.5/10): Appollis didn’t replicate his previous performance but still managed to deliver some dangerous balls into the box. He was substituted later in the match as Bafana Bafana pushed for a winning goal.
  10. Elias Mokwana (7/10): Mokwana worked tirelessly upfront and scored South Africa’s only goal. His hold-up play was crucial in allowing the midfield to join the attack, although he was closely marked for most of the game.
  11. Iqraam Rayners (6/10): Coming off the bench, Rayners added fresh legs but struggled to make a significant impact. He had a few half-chances but couldn’t convert them.

For Congo, their physical approach to the game paid off as they equalized in the second half, and they created several close chances towards the end. The draw leaves South Africa still at the top of their qualification group, but they’ll need a win in their next match to secure a comfortable path to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
