Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed that they have parted ways with coach Rulani Mokwena, ending weeks of speculation. The club released a statement on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024, stating that a “mutual agreement” was reached to terminate Mokwena’s contract.
While Sundowns acknowledged Mokwena’s contribution to their recent success, which includes a DStv Premiership title in his first season as sole head coach, the statement emphasized that the decision aligned with the club’s “objectives and expectations.” Notably, Sundowns fell short in cup competitions like the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup finals and exited the CAF Champions League in the semi-finals.
The club refuted any individual’s influence on the decision, highlighting their commitment to developing South African coaches. Manqoba Mngqithi, Mokwena’s former assistant, will take charge of the team during pre-season preparations in Austria.
Sundowns now set their sights on finding a new head coach before the 2024/25 season kicks off. They also look to maintain their dominance domestically and aim for glory at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
