As South Africans prepare for a mix of chilly coastal waves and cool inland air, it’s important to understand what today’s weather holds. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for potentially damaging coastal waves stretching from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay. Inland provinces including Gauteng, Free State, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga will experience mostly cool to warm conditions, with Gauteng seeing very high ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels. This advisory highlights the need for caution along the coast and sun protection inland.

Understanding the Yellow Level 2 Warning for Coastal Areas

The Yellow Level 2 advisory signals hazardous weather conditions that could impact maritime and coastal communities. Strong waves and rough seas are expected to challenge small vessels and may disrupt coastal infrastructure.

What Does the Warning Mean?

  • Coastal regions from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay can expect strong wave activity, making sea navigation difficult and risky.
  • The Western Cape is experiencing cool to cold conditions with partly cloudy skies and early morning light rain showers in some western areas.
  • These conditions should improve by afternoon, with waves gradually calming along the southern coast.

Maritime operators and recreational boaters should check weather updates regularly and consider postponing trips to avoid dangerous sea conditions.

Inland Weather Outlook: Cool and Variable

While the coast faces rough seas, many inland areas will enjoy more settled weather, though temperatures will remain on the cooler side.

Detailed Inland Conditions

  • Provinces such as Gauteng, Free State, North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga will see mostly clear skies and fine weather.
  • Mornings are expected to be cool, with temperatures warming during the day.
  • Gauteng residents should be aware of very high UV levels. Protective measures such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are recommended, especially during peak sunlight hours.

For the latest updates on UV radiation levels and weather, visit the South African Weather Service.

Expert Advice and Safety Recommendations

Dr Mpho Lekganyane, meteorologist at SAWS, explains, “The current Yellow Level 2 coastal wave warning highlights the need for heightened caution, particularly among small boat operators and coastal communities. Paying attention to official warnings can help prevent accidents and injuries.”

Coastal Safety Tips

  • Avoid swimming or surfing in areas with strong waves and currents.
  • Observe all beach warning flags and signage.
  • Small vessel operators should postpone non-essential journeys until conditions improve.

Inland Safety Tips

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear protective clothing to guard against UV exposure.
  • Limit time spent outdoors during peak UV hours (11am–3pm).
  • Stay hydrated and monitor local weather for any sudden changes.

What to Expect Next

Following today’s weather alert, conditions along the coast are expected to stabilise over the weekend as wave activity decreases. However, meteorologists forecast that cold fronts moving in from the south may bring unsettled weather early next week, so it remains essential to monitor official updates.

Stay Informed and Prepared

Keeping up with reliable weather forecasts and alerts is critical in navigating South Africa’s varied climate. For real-time information, always consult trusted sources such as:

  • South African Weather Service (SAWS)
  • Local news outlets like The Citizen

By staying informed, South Africans can plan their days safely and effectively in line with today’s weather conditions.
