Gauteng Residents to Enjoy Calm Weather as Severe Storms Give Way to Cooler, Rainy Conditions
SA Weather Update: Gauteng is set to experience a much-needed respite from severe weather conditions as cooler temperatures and calmer skies arrive this weekend.
After days of severe thunderstorms that caused flooding in areas like Centurion, residents can look forward to a significant improvement in weather, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The storms wreaked havoc earlier this week, resulting in road closures, damaged property, and widespread power outages.
Severe Weather Causes Disruptions
SAWS had issued a yellow level 2 warning earlier in the week, highlighting the risks of heavy downpours, hail, strong winds, and excessive lightning. These conditions led to the flooding of low-lying areas, such as the subway bridge on Nellmapius Road in Centurion, as well as interruptions to municipal services.
City of Tshwane (CoT) spokesperson Lindela Mashigo stated that technicians have been working tirelessly to restore power to affected areas but emphasized the challenges posed by wet conditions. “Safety remains a priority, and we appeal for patience as we work through the backlog,” Mashigo said.
Improved Weather Forecast
SAWS forecaster Wayne Venter noted that the eastern parts of South Africa, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, will see the first tropical moisture system of the summer. This system is expected to bring substantial rainfall and cooler temperatures from Thursday through early next week.
“This rainfall will provide much-needed relief and lower temperatures, although central and western regions, like the Free State and Northern Cape, may only see isolated thunderstorms,” Venter added.
