A severe weather warning has been issued for Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng, with thunderstorms, flooding, hail, and snow expected this week. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has raised a Yellow Level 3 alert, highlighting the potential dangers of these weather conditions. These provinces are set to experience a range of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even light snowfall in higher-lying areas.

What to Expect in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng

As the weather front moves across the region, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng are bracing for significant weather disruptions. Thunderstorms are expected to hit various areas, bringing with them heavy rains that could lead to localised flooding. Hail is also a concern, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when the storms are likely to be most intense.

Gauteng, including Johannesburg and Pretoria, will experience thunderstorms with the possibility of flash flooding in low-lying areas. The heavy rain and strong winds may cause tree damage and disrupt power lines, so residents are urged to stay indoors during peak storm hours. In Mpumalanga, the east of the province will experience scattered thunderstorms, while Limpopo will face more localised storms, particularly in the western parts.

Expert Insights on the Weather Risks

According to Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services, residents should remain cautious during this period of severe weather. “Stay indoors when possible, and avoid using heating devices in poorly ventilated areas to prevent fire hazards,” he advised. “The heavy rain may cause flash flooding, so it’s essential to stay alert to rising water levels.”

Lindsay Mnguni, from Tshwane Emergency Services, shared similar concerns. “We are expecting heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving up to 20 mm per hour,” he said. “These rains could lead to flooding, particularly in low-lying regions. The strong winds could also result in damage to structures and trees. Additionally, while snow is expected in higher altitudes, drivers should remain cautious, as icy roads may pose a risk.”

Safety Tips During Severe Weather Events

With severe weather conditions on the horizon, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay prepared. Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather updates from reliable sources like SAWS and local news outlets to track storm developments.
  • Prepare for flooding: If you live in a flood-prone area, move important items to higher ground and secure outdoor furniture or objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel: If you don’t need to be on the road, stay home. Flash floods and hailstorms make driving hazardous, particularly in heavy rain.
  • Protect your property: Close windows and doors securely to prevent water and wind damage. Make sure that gutters and drains are clear to prevent flooding.
  • Emergency kits: Stock up on essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, batteries, and a first-aid kit in case of power outages or other emergencies.

Official Weather Updates and Alerts

The South African Weather Service continues to monitor the situation closely. According to their latest update, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist throughout the week. For higher-lying areas in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, light snowfall is also predicted. The cold front causing this weather event is moving across the region, bringing with it the potential for significant disruptions to daily life.

CHECK OUT: Today’s Weather Forecast – 7 August 2025

Severe thunderstorms, flooding, hail, and snow are set to affect Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng this week. These weather events pose a significant risk, especially for those living in low-lying areas or higher altitudes. With expert advice urging residents to stay cautious, prepare their homes, and avoid unnecessary travel, it is vital to stay informed and take appropriate action.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and ensure you’re ready for the unpredictable weather conditions that lie ahead. For the latest weather updates, refer to trusted sources like the South African Weather Service, and always follow official safety guidelines.
