City Power maintenance to leave multiple Johannesburg suburbs without electricity.
Residents in parts of Johannesburg are urged to prepare for a scheduled power interruption on Saturday, 26 April 2025, as City Power embarks on planned maintenance to improve service delivery. According to the utility, the outage will affect 22 suburbs, lasting for six hours from 08:00 to 14:00.
The power interruption is part of City Power’s ongoing maintenance programme aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of its electrical infrastructure. Regular maintenance, the utility says, is vital to prevent unexpected breakdowns and ensure long-term energy stability for Johannesburg’s growing population.

💡 A Country Rewiring Its Energy Future
This scheduled outage comes as South Africa continues to grapple with long-standing electricity issues. While load shedding remains a persistent challenge, the country has taken steps towards transforming its energy sector.
One such development is the launch of a traded electricity market, allowing licensed traders to buy and sell power—an initiative supported by Rand Merchant Bank. The move aims to diversify supply and attract foreign expertise to boost transmission capacity.
“South Africa is opening up the space for international players with strong technical experience in power infrastructure,” said Judy Kobus, head of infrastructure sector solutions at RMB.
This innovation is especially significant in light of a 215% increase in electricity prices from 2008 to 2023 and the need for a more sustainable, diversified energy future.
