Leaving work early isn’t always easy, but sometimes, you just need a solid reason to head out without raising eyebrows. Whether it’s a personal emergency, health-related issue, or something completely out of your control, having a believable excuse can save the day.

If you need a quick getaway, here are 20 fool-proof excuses to leave work early that are solid, reasonable, and effective.

Health-Related Excuses

When it comes to health, most employers won’t argue. These medical-based excuses are often the most effective.

1. “My contact lens tore, and I can barely see.”

A torn contact lens can scratch your cornea, making it painful and difficult to work. If your boss wears contacts, they’ll understand. If they don’t, it sounds serious enough to let you go without further questioning.

2. “I feel a migraine coming on and need to lie down.”

Migraines are unpredictable and disabling making them the excuse to leave work early. Instead of pretending to be in extreme pain, saying you feel one coming is more convincing and allows you to leave before it gets worse.

3. “I don’t feel so good—I think I might have food poisoning.”

Food poisoning is a classic excuse to leave work early because no boss wants you suffering (or worse, throwing up) in the office. The best part? You can recover by the next day without suspicion.

4. “My doctor just called about a last-minute opening for an appointment I’ve been waiting for months.”

In the list of excuses to leave work early medical appointments, especially specialist visits are a good excuse seeing that they take months to secure. This excuse works because it’s urgent, necessary, and completely out of your control.

5. “I’m having the painters in.”

This one is strictly for biological women. It’s a euphemism for dealing with period-related discomfort. If your boss is male, they likely won’t question it at all, thus making it a good excuse on how to leave work early.

Family-Related Excuses

Family emergencies always take priority. These excuses to leave work early ensure a smooth exit.

6. “Family emergency.”

Simple yet effective. No one wants to pry into personal family matters, so this one works almost every time without further questioning.

7. “My child’s school just called—they need me to come right away.”

No employer wants to get in the way of a child’s well-being. This excuse is vague but effective, and you can follow up with a fabricated explanation the next day.

8. “My child/pet is sick, and I need to take care of them.”

Whether it’s a child, a dog, or even a cat, people understand that family comes first. If you don’t have kids, say it’s your pet. If you don’t have a pet, say it’s your mother.

9. “My sister/brother needs me to bail them out of jail.”

This one is bold in terms of excuses to leave work early but if you work in a casual office with a boss who has a sense of humor, it might just do the trick! Be prepared for some follow-up questions the next day.

10. “My mother’s moving company just canceled, and I need to help her move.”

Moving company mishaps are common, and helping a parent is a noble reason to leave work early. No boss wants to stop you from assisting your elderly mother.

Home-Related Excuses

Home-related issues often demand immediate attention, making them believable excuses to leave work early.

11. “My smoke detector won’t stop going off, and I have to deal with it.”

A possible fire hazard trumps work responsibilities. Whether it’s a real emergency or a false alarm, no one will argue against you going home.

12. “I just got a call from the plumber—there’s a serious leak at home that needs my attention.”

Plumbing emergencies can lead to flooding, which makes this excuse urgent and believable. Just sound panicked when you tell your boss.

13. “There’s a delivery I need to sign for.”

Not all excuses have to be dramatic. If the delivery is important and can’t be rescheduled, most employers will understand.

14. “My flatmate locked themselves out, and I need to go help.”

If you live with a roommate, this is the perfect excuse. It shifts the blame onto someone else, making it seem out of your control.

15. “My car just broke down, and I need to sort it out before it gets towed.”

Car trouble is a legitimate excuse because it requires immediate attention. Just say your vehicle is acting up, and you need to handle it before the situation worsens.

Work-Related Excuses

Sometimes, you need a work-related excuse to leave early without suspicion.

16. “My ___ isn’t working.”

Whether it’s your laptop, internet, or work software, a technical issue can make it impossible to do your job. If IT support isn’t available, your only option is to go home.

17. “Unexpected work-related meeting offsite.”

If your job involves external meetings, saying you have to meet a client or vendor is a smart excuse on how to leave work early.

18. “I left my wallet at my friend’s place, and I need to grab it before they leave on vacation.”

This excuse is time-sensitive and relatable. Just make sure you don’t pull out your wallet at work before using it!

Miscellaneous Excuses

These excuses don’t fit into a category but are still solid and believable excuses to leave work early.

19. “The vet called about an appointment for my dog, and they can only fit me in today.”

People love animals, so your boss is unlikely to say no. Express concern for your pet’s well-being, and you’ll be out the door in no time.

20. “My clone just showed up at the office, and it’s best we don’t meet.”

If your boss has a great sense of humor, this one could work. Even if they don’t let you leave, at least you’ll get a laugh out of it!
