Warm Weather Expected in Pretoria Despite a Weak Cold Front: What You Need to Know

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecasted a weak cold front making landfall soon, but will Pretoria feel its effects? Here’s everything you need to know about the expected weather conditions in the capital city this weekend.

Will the Cold Front Affect Pretoria?

According to Vox Weather forecaster Michelle Cordier, the cold front will primarily impact the southern coastal regions of South Africa, bringing light showers. Pretoria, however, is expected to remain mostly warm, with no significant cooling due to the weak nature of the front.

“We had a stronger front earlier this week, which brought rain and cooler weather to parts of the south and east. This weekend’s front is weak and will have limited impact,” Cordier explained.

    Pretoria’s Weekend Weather Forecast

Gauteng residents can look forward to a warm weekend, with temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s. While there might be a few scattered showers on Saturday, Sunday is forecasted to remain dry.

Here’s a detailed temperature breakdown for Pretoria:

    • Thursday: High of 28°C, low of 17°C
    • Friday: High of 27°C, low of 16°C
    • Saturday: High of 30°C, low of 17°C

    Recent Rainfall in Pretoria

Pretoria experienced significant rainfall last week, with some areas recording notable totals. Suburbs such as Irene saw over 100mm of rain, while northern parts of the city reported up to 20mm in a single day. These rains have brought much-needed relief from the scorching heatwaves that plagued the festive season.

    Impact on Water Levels

The heavy rains have positively affected the Vaal Dam, which recently reached 50.5% capacity—a significant improvement from its earlier decline. Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson Wisane Mavasa confirmed that plans to release water from the Sterkfontein Dam are no longer necessary as the Vaal Dam continues to rise.

The Integrated Vaal River System, a vital water supply for Gauteng, has also benefited, increasing from 71.4% to 79.4% capacity this week.

Despite a weak cold front moving across the country, Pretoria residents can expect a warm and mostly dry weekend. While occasional showers may occur on Saturday, the city is likely to enjoy sunny conditions on Sunday.
