The Toyota Hilux GR-S III 2024 continues the legacy of the GR-S lineup, building on the success of its second-generation predecessor, which dominated motoring headlines in 2022. Now in its third iteration, the GR-S III features significant upgrades in both design and engineering. While it brings enhanced off-road capabilities and bold new styling, the model makes a few compromises that may impact its appeal for some buyers.

A Familiar Powertrain with a Fresh Appeal

Under the hood, the Hilux GR-S III retains the same 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine that powered the second-generation model. This proven powertrain delivers 165 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, representing a 10% improvement over the standard GD-6 engine. Despite the increased output, the GR-S III is no faster than its predecessor due to additional weight and drag introduced by the wider body and larger tires.

The third-generation model completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 10.94 seconds, compared to the 10.32 seconds recorded by its predecessor in 2022. While the difference may seem minor, it places the GR-S III behind rivals like the Isuzu D-Max Arctic AT35, which achieves a time of 10.91 seconds.

Off-Road Focus: Standard All-Terrain Tires and Visual Enhancements

Toyota has made off-road performance a priority with the GR-S III. For the first time in Hilux history, the GR-S comes standard with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels. This addition enhances its ability to tackle rugged terrain, making it an ideal companion for adventurous drivers.

To match its off-road prowess, the GR-S III sports a bold and aggressive design. The front grille draws inspiration from the Toyota Tundra, complemented by extended wheel arches, heavy-duty skid plates, and redesigned bumpers. Gloss black mirror caps and other Dakar-inspired elements complete the visual package, ensuring the GR-S III stands out both on and off the road.

Enhanced Engineering for Rugged Terrain

Toyota has equipped the Hilux GR-S III with several mechanical upgrades aimed at improving its off-road capabilities. New mono-tube shock absorbers provide better damping, while enhanced brakes and upgraded coil springs ensure improved control over challenging terrain. The track widths have been increased by 140 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear, giving the GR-S III greater stability. Additionally, the ground clearance has been raised to 265 mm, enabling it to tackle obstacles with ease.

A Competitive Yet Challenging Landscape

Despite its rugged enhancements, the GR-S III finds itself in a fiercely competitive segment. The Isuzu D-Max Arctic AT35 offers similar off-road capabilities and slightly faster acceleration. Meanwhile, Ford’s Ranger Raptor raises the bar for double cabs with its 3.0-liter twin-turbo petrol engine, producing an impressive 292 kW and 592 Nm. This allows the Raptor to set new records for production double cabs, making it a tough competitor for the Hilux GR-S III.

The Trade-Offs

The GR-S III’s added weight and drag from its wider stance and larger tires result in a slight reduction in speed. While this may deter buyers seeking peak performance, the trade-offs are justified by the model’s improved off-road capability and durability.

Final Thoughts

The Toyota Hilux GR-S III 2024 strikes a fine balance between rugged performance, bold styling, and modern engineering. Its standard all-terrain tires, enhanced suspension, and Dakar-inspired design make it a solid choice for off-road enthusiasts. However, in a market filled with high-performance contenders like the Ford Ranger Raptor, the GR-S III may need further innovation to stay ahead of the competition.

For those who prioritize durability and off-road capabilities over raw speed, the Hilux GR-S III remains a compelling option. Its combination of power, practicality, and aesthetics ensures it continues to uphold Toyota’s reputation for reliability and toughness, even as the competition intensifies.
