Hijacking Hotspots in Gauteng

Gauteng, South Africa’s economic hub, is known for its bustling cities and vibrant communities. However, it also has areas that are notorious for vehicle hijackings. Being aware of these hotspots can help you stay vigilant and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim. In this article, we will outline the top 10 hijacking hotspots in Gauteng for 2024 and provide tips on how to stay safe.

Hijacking Hotspots in GautengSafety Tips to Avoid Hijacking

1. Johannesburg CBD

The central business district of Johannesburg is a high risk area, especially during peak traffic hours. The dense population and heavy traffic make it a prime target for hijackers.

2. Soweto

Soweto, one of the largest townships in Gauteng, has several areas that are known for hijackings. Main roads such as Chris Hani Road and the Golden Highway are particularly risky.

3. Midrand

Midrand, a rapidly growing area, has seen a rise in hijacking incidents, especially around the Allandale Road and New Road off-ramps.

4. Centurion

The R21 and N1 highways in Centurion are common spots for hijackings, particularly near off-ramps and busy intersections.

5. Pretoria CBD

Pretoria’s central business district is another high-risk area. Streets like Church Street and busy intersections are often targeted by hijackers.

6. Kempton Park

Near O.R. Tambo International Airport, Kempton Park is a hotspot due to its busy roads and high traffic volumes, particularly around the R21 highway.

7. Roodepoort

Roodepoort, especially areas like Florida and Horizon, has been identified as a hijacking hotspot. The main roads and intersections are commonly targeted.

8. Tembisa

Tembisa, a large township, has several high-risk areas, particularly on busy routes like Andrew Mapheto Drive.

9. Benoni

The N12 highway and Snake Road in Benoni are known for frequent hijacking incidents.

10. Randburg

Randburg’s main roads, such as Malibongwe Drive and the N1 highway, are hotspots for hijackings, particularly during rush hours.

Safety Tips to Avoid Hijacking

  1. Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when approaching intersections or stopping at traffic lights.
  2. Keep Windows Closed: Keeping your windows closed and doors locked can deter potential hijackers.
  3. Avoid Distractions: Avoid using your phone or being distracted while driving, especially in high-risk areas.
  4. Plan Your Route: Plan your journey to avoid known hotspots, and try to stick to well-lit, busy roads.
  5. Follow Your Instincts: If you feel unsafe or sense that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or a busy public area.
  6. Use Tracking Devices: Install a tracking device in your vehicle to help locate it if it is stolen.
  7. Be Cautious at Home: Be aware when entering or leaving your home. Hijackers often target driveways.

While Gauteng has its share of hijacking hotspots, being aware of these areas and following safety tips can help you stay safe. Always remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your vehicle. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, contact the local authorities immediately.

Stay informed and stay safe on the roads!
